The second half of the 19th century saw the birth of a new science: anthropology. Charles Cordier (French, 1827-1905) was one of the first to place his talents in the service of this new discipline. Cordier created the handsome bronze bust of Said Abdullah, a member of the Mayac Tribe from the Kingdom of Darfur in 1848. Along with the African Venus, cast in bronze in 1851, it became one of the artist’s most popular sculptures. These magnificent casts of the paired bronzes now grace the 19th century galleries of the Walters Art Museum.
20 blank cards with 20 envelopes (10 each of 2 designs) are included in this handsome boxed set. Cards are approximately 5 x 7 inches.
