Born in Baltimore, Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915) trained initially as an engineer but later taught himself to paint in watercolors. He traveled extensively and many of his works were reproduced in deluxe travel books. The artist regarded this view of the Grand Canal in Venice showing the 17th Century church of Santa Maria della Salute, as one of his masterpieces.
