An Italian Renaissance painting attributed to Fra Carnavale (Bartolomeo Di Giovanni Corradini) The Ideal City (ca. 1480-84) features a majestic view of an idealized urban square. This painting celebrates the values embodied in a well-ordered society rules by a virtuos prince. The architecture is a metaphor of good government, while the perspective system, embracing the whole scene can also be read as a metaphor for the role of rationality and order in the ideal city/state. There are two other complimentary paintings, attributed to the same artist: Ideal City in Urbino and Urban Perspective in Berlin.
